Using a sprayer can be a real time saver. There’s nothing like it for painting rough, uneven areas, or spaces where precision is not important and everything can look the same. Here are a few steps to help save painting time as you use a paint spray machine.
Instructions
1.
Rent an airless spray machine. It’s the state-of-the-art – and what’s painting if not art? You won’t want to buy one unless you’re a professional – they’re expensive.

2.
Protect areas adjacent to the area you’re painting very well. Spraying puts a lot of paint into the air, and it doesn’t all go on the wall. It can drift like a fog and settle in places you never wanted it to go – such as another room.
3.
Seal the area if you’re working inside. Outside, never spray on a windy day, and cover your car (and your neighbor’s car), all plants, walkways, and even the exposed sides of nearby buildings.
4.
Note that most airless sprayers work the same way: paint is poured into a bucket or bin, and the pump runs it through a hose and out the nozzle in your hand.
5.
Pour the paint through a strainer into the bin or bucket; you don’t want any lumps or odd bits of non-paint material.
6.

Thin the paint, but no more than recommended by the manufacturer or it won’t cover well.
7.

Cover yourself very well, head to toe: wear long-sleeved shirts and possibly gloves. You’ll get paint on yourself, without question. Consider wearing a ski mask.
8.

Start at a corner, work from the top down, and keep your strokes steady and smooth; a lot of paint is going on the surface in a short period of time. It’s better to paint several light coats than one heavy one.
9.

Take care not to create “columns” of paint; this is a result of too much overlapping.
Tips & Warnings
1.
There are basically three kinds of sprayers: airless (the best), compressed air (not necessarily a bad thing), and electric pump (for small projects).
2.

When you rent the unit, explain to the dealer what kind of room you’re painting and what kind of paint you’re using.
3.

Get instructions specific to your machine from the dealer; paint sprayers can be finicky things. The nozzles, particularly, are prone to clogging, and you’ll have to know how fix them; they don’t all work the same.
4.

Cleaning requirements may also be different: this equipment needs to be kept really clean, or it just won’t work.
5.

If you’re painting in the same room – or even in the vicinity of – any appliances such as water heaters, air conditioners, or furnaces, turn them off! If you’re using latex paint, you could ruin the appliance. If you’re using alkyd, you could cause an explosion.
6.

The paint that comes out of the nozzle is really moving ‘ if you hold it close to your skin, it can go right through it, or take some off.
7.

Never try to unclog a nozzle while it’s running. The pressure coming out the end is very high – high enough to puncture skin.
8.

Wear a respirator, even outdoors, and not one of those little cloth masks, but the real deal, with canisters. Otherwise you’ll be inhaling a mist of liquid that’s really not good for you.

An Excellent Way to Paint

——————————————————————————–

Airless paint sprayers are one of the best inventions of all time. Only the brush and roller can be considered more important.

Airless sprayers can apply a wide range of coatings and finishes in less time than any other application method. Plus apply the coating at any thickness desired.
Airless paint sprayer refers to a method of applying house paint at high pressure to atomize the paint. This method works by forcing the paint, or primer, through a small tip opening at very high pressure.

Airless sprayers do not use compressed air.

The basic components of the airless paint sprayer are a pump, hose, gun and tip.
There are two pump types, piston and diaphragm. Both work very well. But the diaphragm type wont be able to pump the very thick materials like a piston pump can.

The most versatile airless paint sprayers are the piston pump types.

A piston pump has many components including a piston, packings, and check valves. The piston moves up creating a vacuum to suck up the paint into a chamber, the fluid section, and down to push the paint into a high-pressure hose.

The packings create a seal to prevent pressure losses during operation. Professional airless sprayers use self-adjusting packings to prevent premature wear and the need for repairs.
Check valves, or ball and seat valves, direct the flow of material from the fluid section of the pump to the hose. This prevents the paint from being pumped back through the pick-up tube.

All piston pumps have these components in one form or another.

A diaphragm pump also uses a piston, but in a different way. The piston moves hydraulic fluid to move the diaphragm, which in turn sucks up the paint and then pushes it through the hose and gun.
No moving parts touch the diaphragm. The movement of the piston and hydraulic fluid cause the diaphragm to move up and down very rapidly.

There are no packings with this design, but check valves are still necessary.

High-pressure hose is necessary for this application method.

This hose is rated for the maximum output pressure of the pump; 3000 psi is the typical operating pressure.

The attached fittings are ¼ inch and will work with most units. This is very tough hose that is kink resistant and capable of withstanding very high pressure.

Never attempt to repair this hose as personal injury could result. It is best to replace than repair.

Spray Gun

The spray gun is a valve that is used to control the airless paint sprayer and hold the tip. With a handle and trigger it resembles a handgun.
When the trigger is pulled the valve is opened and paint is allowed to travel to the tip and finally to the surface being painted.

Comfort is a big factor in choosing the right spray gun.

Manufactures produce 2 and 4 finger guns. The numbers, 2 or 4, refers to the amount of fingers needed to pull the trigger.

I like the 2 finger airless spray guns for their comfort and balance. Choosing a spray tip is difficult and depends on the capabilities of your pump and the material being sprayed. This choice will affect the performance and effectiveness of your airless paint sprayer.

These are the basic components of all airless paint sprayers. The type you choose to own will depend on your expectations and needs. Remember the thicker the material to be sprayed the more power you will need.

Crowder Painting owns a variety of professional airless pumps including,

Graco 695 electric: This is an excellent piston pump that is very powerful and capable of performing almost any paint spraying task.

Spraytech ED1150 electric diaphragm pump: used for fine finish spraying and power rolling.

Titan 390 electric piston pump: this pump is at leased 10-12 years old and still going. Capable of fine finish spraying and painting the exterior of your home.

Titan 390 gas piston pump: another old pump that is used exclusively for exteriors and is powerful enough to pump light block fill or thick house paint.
